Personal Histories

Being a junior, I am pretty much just now really getting into the field of speech pathology. I already love it. I have enjoyed every class that I have taken so far. It all seems so very interesting to me. I cannot wait to actually get involved in the therapy process and to assist others in their rehabilitation.
I was first introduced to the field of speech pathology by a lady that I used to baby-sit for. She is a speech pathologist in the school systems in Logan. I had always said that I wanted to be a teacher, but my mom frowned upon that (she is a teacher). It wasn't that she did not want me to be a teacher, but she knew that there isn't much demand for teachers at the present time. She wanted me to have more opportunities in my profession. (I know that I am making her sound like an awful mom/teacher, but she isn't. She is wonderful in both aspects) Alice (the lady I baby-sat for) then started talking to me about her field. It all seemed so interesting to me. Plus, I liked the fact that she got paid more than a teacher, but had less children. I know that sounds silly, but that was all that I knew about the profession at the time.
As I got to Marshall, my knowledge of communication disorders became broader and broader. I found out that there is more to speech therapy than just teaching a child how to get rid of a lisp. Everything in this field is such an interest to me, and I cannot wait to find out more. I also learned that being a speech pathologist does not only limit you to the school systems. I learned that I could also work in the hospitals, nursing homes, and many other places.
I know that still have two more years to go through, so I still have much more to learn. I hope that it stays as an interest to me, because at the present time, I love it. Granted, I am going to have to probably work my butt off. I guess it will all pay off in the end.
