Preface

This project was developed for a computer class in the communication disorders department at Marshall University. It is a Multigenre Project (MRP), which is a combination of many different writings that all pertain to one topic. The topic that I chose to research is late-talkers vs. language delayed children. I became interested in the topic because I have a 30 month old cousin who does not talk very much. I decided that I would research late-talkers and language delayed children so that I could look for any distinct characteristics. I was curious to see if it was normal for him to be talking, or not talking, like he was. After researching and learning everything that I have learned over the semester, I have concluded that my little cousin will be okay. I think that he is just a late bloomer, and he will eventually catch up with the rest of his peers. He has already demonstrated some improvement over the past couple of months since I first started researching the topic.

The different genres in the MRP include writings from different voices. Please keep in mind when you are viewing the genres that it is all fictitious. The voices that I chose to use include the voice of a clinician, a child, a parent, and the parent’s friend. Using all of these voices demonstrates examples of what everybody goes through when their child is not talking like his/her peers. For example, the parent may feel frustration because his/her child is not communicating with others. The child can be having problems with understanding what others are saying, expressing what he/she wants to say, or a combination of both.

I had to incorporate six individual genres and a seventh unifying genre to tie everything together. My instructor required that I use a powerpoint presentation, a webliography, and a poem. The rest of the genres were up to me. I chose to use a clinician’s journal entries, a letter to a mother from her late-talking child, and an interview between a clinician and her client’s mother. For my unifying genre, I chose to do an e-mail exchange between a parent and her friend.

I hope you enjoy what you see in my MRP. I worked really hard on it. Feel free to comment on my genres. Tell me what you think. If you think that I need improvement, do not hesitate to let me know.

Week 12 Online Journal

Well, I must say that this has probably been one of the best weeks in my life! I became an aunt this week, and I am in seventh heaven. He is beautiful!

Now, on a less exciting note, I will tell you about my school work over the past week. The MOO session was really helpful this week because it made me realize that I have lots and lots of more citations to make. I did not realize that I had to cite so many things. I mean, I knew that I had to give credit to the sources that I got the information from, but I did not realize that it included the things that I have learned in my classes.

For this week, I planned on writing preface, about the author, and acknowledgement sections of my Multigenre Project. I have finished all three. I also had to peer review the unifying genres for the people in my group. I really enjoyed looking at everybody’s ideas. They were all so good. I still need to review everybody else’s sources as well as revise my own. I also need to include some intext citations.

In order to finish my work this week, I worked on my assignments at my house. I did not go to the computer lab this week. I decided to take a break. So, Julie and Cindy, I missed you guys!

As for questions, I really do not have any. I am worried that I am not going to get all of my citations. I have a book, but I am afraid I am going to miss something. Other than that, I think I am question free about the project and about the class.

Acknowledgements

I would like to take the time to acknowledge those that helped me throughout the semester. First of all, I want to thank Julie and Cindy. You girls have been great! I don’t think that I could have made it through the semester without you (I would feel like the only idiot in the class)! :) Secondly, I want to thank my group (Julie, Kara, and Tiffany). I have really appreciated all of the feedback that I have gotten from all of you. I would also like to acknowledge my boyfriend, Jason, because he is the one who has had to suffer for all of the stress that I have been through this semester (it has made me a little cranky). So Jason, if you read this, I am sorry! Lastly, I would like to thank Mrs. McComas. I appreciate everything that you put in to your work. Although we are required to do many things for your classes, I feel like you put just as much time into them as we do. Thank you for that. Not many teachers would do what you do.

I believe that I included everybody. If I missed someone, I apologize.
